That Real Full Moon Black Magic

Lose Control by Teddy Swims is a raw, aching vocal tour de force. In this 2024 track, Swims blends R&B and funk/soul sensibilities to make something special.

Jaten Dimsdale, a.k.a. Teddy Swims, is an anomaly. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, playing football and performing in musical theater. He is the grandson of a Pentecostal pastor. He is/was involved with various bands in genres such as 80s hair metal, funk, soul, and alt-country. Jaten's current project, Teddy Swims, benefits from the numerous experiences and artistic expressions at his command.

Lose Control is a great vocal demo track. Swims's range and agility is notable for a male singer, but his performance is much more than just impressive technical flexes (of which there are plenty.) He sings with emotion and heft. His falsetto is raw, but powerful with a deeply smooth and resonant lower register. The ability to play with dynamics, moving from subtle and soft to bold and strong in the blink of an eye, makes for a poignant emotional journey and is a sweet showcase for mid-range woofers.
