L'AMOUR DE MA VIE by Billie Eilish is a beautifully crafted exploration of soundscapes. It starts as an intimate affair focused on Eilish's trademark sultry, breathy vocal styling. The production, handled by her long-time collaborator and brother FINNEAS, is as excellent as I've come to expect. She's whispering in our ear. We can hear every breath, half inhale, lip smack, and throat contraction. The instrumentation is as deep and wide as it is spare. It's a great start, but we're light-years from where we'll end up.

Over its five-and-a-half minute run time, L'AMOUR DE MA VIE morphs from a sardonic jazzy dirge for a dead relationship into a vapor wave dance club banger with echoing stadium-pop vocals auto-tuned within an inch of their life. If you want to test the range of your hi-fi system in under six minutes, this is a good one.

The band fully joins the party at 1:24, and vocal arrangements rise to the occasion, expanding in volume and complexity while maintaining clarity. An eyebrow-raising moment comes at 3:10 timestamp with auto-tune making a ham fisted anachronistic appearance. My curiosity turns into attention twenty seconds later when, in an excellent bit of aural special effects, we're treated to a dance club slowly emerging on the other side of our wall before knocking it down and fully crashing the pity party.

In the last act, Eilish's robotic vocals annihilate tweeters and mids. Layered synths echo across a percussive throb FINNEAS uses to draw a fat underline beneath the chaos. Nothing is remarkable about this four-on-the-floor beat except that, like a perfectly crisp white shirt, it comes off as classic rather than basic when worn this well.

Ninety seconds later, we're done. Have I been listening for five minutes or ten? Was there a track change I missed? No?

I'd better start it again now that I know the end.
